Prof J J Henning is the dean of the Faculty of law.
Johan Henning is a graduate of the University of the Free State and obtained his LL D. (Doctor Legum) after advanced research at the Universities of London and Cambridge in the United Kingdom and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, Germany. He was admitted as an Attorney of the Supreme Court of South Africa in 1974.
He was appointed professor of Mercantile Law at the University of South Africa at the age of 30 in 1978, as head of the Centre for Business Law, UFS, in 1984 and as distinguished professor at the UFS in 1994. He has published more than 180 scientific articles in accredited journals and more than 50 legal handbooks and monographs. He serves as editor as well as on the editorial boards of more than fifteen accredited scientific legal journals, both national and international.

Henning was the head of the Department of Mercantile Law, UFS, from 1987 until 1998, and has been head of the Department of Roman Law, Legal History and Comparative Law since 1992.
He became Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of the Free State on 1 April 1998.
He is also the director of the Centre for Partnership and Company Law of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies of the University of London, a position which he has occupied on a part-time basis since 2000.
He was initiated as an honorary fellow of the Society of Advanced Legal Studies (United Kingdom) in 1999 and as an honorary member of the Order of the Coif (United States) in 2002.
He is a professor extraordinarius at the University of Johannesburg.

The dean is assisted by the faculty manager, mrs. Adri Kotze, who is responsible for the management and coordination of the administrative component of the faculty. Mrs. Hanlie Eramus, faculty secretary, and Mrs Suona Burger, senior officer, are responsible for the general administration of the faculty. Miss. Karina Britz is the dean's secretary.

Prof. Frans Swanepoel, Director of Research Development and Prof. Johan Henning, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the Free State (UFS) were inaugurated as members of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) during the award ceremony recently held at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. Prof. Esta van Heerden from the Department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology was the recipient of the 2009 Young Scientist of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), the Department of Science and Technology and ASSAf. Prof. Jonathan Jansen Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the UFS is Vice-President of ASSAf.
